The Japanese government approved the designation of 17 additional airports and ports for potential use by the Self-Defense Forces and the Japan Coast Guard.

The newly included facilities feature New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, Chubu Centrair International Airport in Aichi, and Sendai-Shiogama Port in Miyagi, officials said Wednesday.

The designation allows for upgrades to runways and seawalls to prepare the sites for military and coast guard operations in emergencies.

With the new additions, the total number of designated facilities rises to 57, comprising 24 airports and 33 ports.

The government allocated 225 billion yen in fiscal 2026 to fund infrastructure improvements, including roads that improve access to the facilities.

Most of the investment focuses on Hokkaido, the southwestern Kyushu region, and Okinawa, aimed at enhancing readiness and mobility.

The budget more than doubles last year’s allocation of 96.8 billion yen, reflecting a strategic push to strengthen Japan’s defense capabilities.

Officials said the move is part of a broader plan to ensure rapid deployment of forces and resources in case of contingencies.
