DICT Secretary urges NPC to name companies violating privacy rights

Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda has urged the National Privacy Commission (NPC) to publicly identify companies and apps that repeatedly violate Filipinos’ privacy rights.

In his keynote address at the 8th National Data Privacy Conference on Tuesday, Aguda called for the creation of a monthly privacy report card by the NPC to highlight companies that comply with or breach the country’s privacy laws.

“Dito sisingilin natin ang mga nagkukulang sa pagprotekta sa publiko (This is how we’ll punish those who fail to protect the public). This is about building public trust and industry accountability,” he said, adding that repeat offenders “will no longer operate in silence.”

Aguda also urged the NPC to enhance educational campaigns, establish more grievance channels, and prioritize protection for vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, students, overseas Filipino workers, and barangay data privacy officers.

The conference, part of the annual Privacy Awareness Week, gathered government officials and experts to discuss topics including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, youth protection, and fostering a safer digital environment in the Philippines.
