Wawa Dam mitigated flooding effects

The local government of Rizal expressed its gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for the timely inauguration of the Wawa Dam, as it saved nearby areas from worse flooding during the onslaught of Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon.

“If without it, I feel like most likely San Mateo and Montalban would be down and definitely Marikina and parts of Quezon City and even Pasig would be affected because of Laguna Lake,” Rizal Gov. Nina Ricci Ynares told President Marcos during the situation briefing in the province on Friday.

According to Ynares, the Wawa Dam is now almost filled after just two days of heavy rainfall from Carina. She pointed out that it will take six months before the dam is supposedly filled.

“Just imagine kung wala ‘yan. Hanggang ngayon, Sir, may tubig pa rin ang NCR [National Capital Region] kung wala ‘yan dam na ‘yan,” Rizal 3rd District Rep. Jojo Garcia also told the President.

President Marcos personally visited Carina-affected residents in Rizal on Friday. He extended assistance to the affected residents shortly after the situation briefing. The briefing was held to determine the extent of the damage brought by the typhoon to the province.

President Marcos earlier led the ceremony for the impounding process of Upper Wawa Dam in Montalban, Rodriguez, Rizal. PND
