Transport agencies, LGUs rationalizing routes for PUVMP

The government is already rationalizing the routes of public utility vehicles (PUVs) under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

In a briefing at Malacañang on Monday, DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista said that once completed, the route rationalization, or the creation of the Local Public Transport Route Plan (LPTRP), will determine the profitable and sustainable routes for public utility vehicles (PUVs).

“Pag na-implement na natin ‘yung route rationalization with the support and assistance of the local government, made-determine natin ‘yung mga ruta na talagang magiging profitable, sustainable that can support the operations of modern vehicles,” Bautista said.

Furthermore, operators will only be required to upgrade their old vehicles upon the finalization of the LPTRP.

“Kasi ibig sabihin noon, puwede silang suportahan na ng mga financial institutions dahil mayroong assurance na magiging profitable ‘yung operations nila. So they can replace the old vehicles,” Bautista said.

The route rationalization stage involves collaboration between the DOTr, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), and all Local Government Units (LGUs).

“For the next two years or so aayusin po at malalaman natin kung ilan ang mga ruta with the specific number of units which will be enough for the commuters,” DOTr Undersecretary Andy Ortega added.
