Thailand stamped its class over host Philippines, 28-26, 25-14, 25-14, to sweep the first leg of the 4th Men’s Southeast Asia Volleyball League at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila Sunday night.
The Thais banked on opposite Bhinijdee Napadet, middle blocker Nilsawai Kissada, and outside hitter Phanram Anurak to secure their first title after finishing second and third in the inaugural edition last year.
Napadet finished with 14 points on 13 attacks while Kissada also delivered 14 points, including five blocks and three aces. Anurak added 13 points, 11 on attacks.
Noel Kampton had nine attacks and an ace for Alas Pilipinas, who took the bronze medal with a 1-2 slate. The Philippines' lone victory was against Vietnam, 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, in the opener.
Indonesia, last year's two-leg champion, settled for the silver medal with a 2-1 record after surviving Vietnam, 21-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-12, 15-12, in the other game.
Leo Ordiales and Buds Buddin chipped in seven points each for the Philippines, which played without Bryan Bagunas who was injured after a bad fall during the game against Indonesia.
“We're all-out despite many injuries in the team. We just have to trust the process because coach Angiolino is okay. I'm speechless," Kampton said.
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation appointed Italian Angiolino Frigoni to coach the Alas Pilipinas last June. Assisting him are Dante Alinsunurin, Matteo Antonucci, Odjie Mamon, trainer Dexter Clamor, physiotherapist Yuichi Akaba, and team manager Jerome Guhit. (PNA)
