Visiting the captivating land of the rising sun left me in awe of the breathtaking views, but it was the impeccable highways and public infrastructure that truly amazed me. This experience prompted me to reflect on the state of our own public works and highways back home. I was appalled by the substandard repair work on our roads and bridges, which resulted in bumpy and uncomfortable travels.
It's worth noting that our Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has allocated over 8 billion pesos towards various infrastructure projects. However, I can't help but question the effectiveness of our planning and projects division.
During a recent journey from Tokyo to Ashikaga, I observed road repairs being conducted seamlessly without causing any traffic disruptions. Even in bustling areas like Shibuya, the flow of fast-moving cars was uninterrupted. This stark comparison left me pondering, could "jealousy" be the right word to describe my feelings?
Quoting our President BBM during the signing of the General Appropriations Act of 2024, "Please take good care of it, as this is our people's hard-earned money." It is evident that there exist new technologies that could revolutionize the construction of public works and highways. These advancements encompass factors such as physical environmental considerations and much more.
Similar to Japan, the Philippines faces challenges in traffic management and dealing with natural disasters. There is a pressing need to enhance our slope protection technology and flood control projects to better prepare for and mitigate such risks. I have confidence that the DPWH is equipped with the knowledge and expertise to address these issues effectively.
I urge the authorities to strive for excellence and implement these improvements diligently. Enhancing our infrastructure is crucial not only for the safety and well-being of our citizens but also to attract foreign investment and boost tourism. It is essential that we prioritize infrastructure development as a foundation for progress.
The Philippines boasts immense potential, yet a lack of strong leadership within the agencies involved and a culture of ignorance have hindered our growth and development. It is imperative that we address these shortcomings and work towards a brighter future for our nation. Let us not squander the opportunities before us and instead strive for excellence in all aspects of governance and infrastructure development.

The recent bus accident that tragically claimed the lives of three individuals and left 17 others injured was truly heartbreaking. It is distressing to see such road mishaps occurring with alarming frequency.
One cannot help but wonder if the Department of Transportation or DOTr should reconsider issuing licenses to buses that are not roadworthy. Many of these buses are poorly maintained and excessively old, raising serious concerns about their safety on our streets and highways. While we cannot undo the loss of those individuals, we have the power to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
It is imperative that stricter measures be implemented, including more rigorous testing for bus drivers to assess both their physical fitness and driving capabilities. By taking decisive action, we can proactively prevent similar accidents and safeguard the lives of our citizens.
Let us not wait for more lives to be lost before we act. It is essential that we prioritize safety and take decisive steps to ensure that our roads are safe for all individuals.
