ENTEBBE, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Poland has dominated the 2024 FISU World University Mind Sports Championship that climaxed on Sunday in Entebbe, Uganda.
The Poland team came out top in both Bridge and Chess in the competition that took place at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel.
In the Bridge final, Poland defeated France with 15.30 points, while Germany overcame Chinese Taipei with 42.28 points in the play-off match to finish third.
"We are very happy that we emerged champions in the Bridge final. It has been a very competitive Championship, and we enjoyed our time here in Uganda," Tomasz Kielbasa, one of Poland's team members, told Xinhua after the final. Poland's winning team also had Krzysztof Cichy, Maciej Kedzierski, Kacper Kopka, Ryszard Rosikiewicz and Filip Trojanski.
China was a class apart in the classification category played over seven rounds when they collected 258.17 points, while the U.S. picked 236.25 points. Slovakia and Uganda followed in that order.
Poland also excelled in the chess event, capturing three of the four individual titles.
Milosz Szpar of Poland defeated two French competitors to clinch the gold medal in the men's classical on Sunday. Yovann Gatineau and Benjamin Defromont settled for second and third place, respectively.
In the women's blitz event on Friday, Poland dominated, with Julia Antolak emerging victorious with 7.5 points, while Liwia Jarocka and Anna Kubicka secured silver and bronze respectively. Polish veteran Igor Janik took victory in the men's blitz , followed by Richard Mladek of the Czech Republic and Richard Turcan of Slovakia.
In the women's classical event on Sunday, Aakanksha Hagawane of India emerged as the gold medalist while her compatriot Saina Salonika finished second, and Poland's Alicja Sliwicka took the bronze.
