PNP in 'final stage' of SONA security preparations

Updated: Jul 12

MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) is now in the "final stage" of its security preparations for the third State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

In a press briefing in Camp Crame on Tuesday afternoon, PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said they are primarily focusing on the security measures in the vicinity of the Batasang Pambansa Complex as security inside the chamber is under the purview of the House Office of the Sergeant at Arms and the Presidential Security Group.

“Wala naman tayong namomonitor na ano mang seryosong banta sa seguridad lalong lalo na sa pagsasagawa ng SONA ng ating Pangulo (We have not monitored any serious security threats, especially for the President's SONA),” Fajardo said.

Fajardo said they are regularly coordinating with their counterparts from other law enforcement agencies for possible threats to the Marcos administration.

At least 22,000 police officers will secure the SONA, and 6,000 will be deployed near the Batasang Pambansa Complex where Marcos will deliver his address.

"We have to make some rerouting pati doon, especially in areas where our VIPs would pass through and of course, the anticipation of mass actions which do not have a permit. These are some of the anticipated scenarios na ating tinitingnan kaya maglalatag tayo ng magandang security diyan sa kahabaan ng Commonwealth (Avenue) at yung mga daan (that we are looking at so we are implementing a comprehensive security plan along the stretch of Commonwealth Avenue and the roads) leading to Commonwealth and of course doon sa paligid ng (in the vicinity of the) Batasan Complex," Fajardo said.

The President delivers the SONA every year, usually held every last Monday of July, to report the state of the country, unveil the administration’s agenda and ask Congress to pass priority measures.
