PBBM vows to hold culprits in Bataan oil spill accountable

The government is currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the oil spill incidents in Bataan.

According to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the government intends to hold accountable all individuals responsible for the incidents.

“Sa ngayon, iniimbestigahan na natin ang paglubog ng mga barko upang makakalap tayo ng sapat na impormasyon [at] mapanagot ang nagkasala ayon sa batas,” President Marcos said in his speech during the distribution of financial assistance to oil spill-affected residents in Cavite.

President Marcos led the distribution of PhP363,050,000 in financial assistance and standby funds to over 33,000 fisherfolk and their families affected by the Bataan oil spill in Cavite.

The President assured affected residents of compensation.

Motorized Tanker (MTKR) Terranova sank in the waters off Limay, Bataan, on July 25, while MTKR Jason Bradley went down in the sea off Mariveles, Bataan, on July 27. MTKR Mirola 1, on the other hand, ran aground, also off Mariveles, on July 31.

Over 25,000 families and more than 33,000 fisherfolk in Cavite were affected by the oil spill, according to the President.

President Marcos said oil recovery operations have started for MTKR Terranova.

“Masaya akong ibalita na matagumpay na nating napigilan ang pagtagas ng langis mula sa mga barkong ito, partikular yung Terranova, nang hindi na ito makapinsala sa ating kalikasan,” the President said.

“Nasimulan na rin ang ating operasyon para sa tuluyang pag-recover ng langis mula sa nasabing barko at inaasahang [matatapos] natin ito sa lalong madaling panahon,” he added.

For MTKR Jason Bradley, the repair of the manhole and air vents is ongoing.

“Patuloy naman ang ating pag-kumpuni at pag-aayos ng manhole at air vents sa Jason Bradley na kabilang [sa] paghahanda para sa ating refloating operation,” the President said.

For MTKR Mirola 1, seawater siphoning is ongoing.

In his speech, the President assured that the administration is continuously looking for solutions to the problems brought by the oil spill incidents.

“Mga kababayan, kasabay ng pagbibigay namin ng tulong sa mga komunidad, asahan din po ninyo na patuloy ang inyong pamahalaan sa paghahanap ng solusyon sa mga problemang dinulot ng pangyayaring ito,” he said. *PND*
