President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed his satisfaction with the government’s response to the effects of Tropical Storm Enteng in Rizal province.
The President also assured the public that the government will continue to respond accordingly amid weather forecasts predicting potentially more severe tropical cyclones in the coming days.
“So…as a response, maayos naman ang response natin. Inaalala ko lang talaga dahil kung kagaya ng nangyari sa (Typhoon) Carina na naubos lahat ng supply namin ng mga food pack… lahat ng gamit na binibigay natin as relief, for the response ay may parating na naman na baka maging bagyo,” President Marcos told reporters after attending to the situation briefing on the effects of Typhoon Enteng in Rizal province.
“Kaya’t kailangan natin tingnan nang mabuti kung ano ‘yung ginagawa natin and make sure that we have sufficient supplies for everyone. Kung mangyari talaga ‘yun na may dumating pang bagong bagyo pagkatapos nitong Enteng, handa naman tayo na mayroon tayong sapat na supply para naman makatulong tayo at mabigyan natin ng tulong ang mga nadaanan, naging biktima ng bagyo,” he said.
The President assured that the government will continue to respond not only by distributing relief goods but also by working on large-scale, long-term solutions to the flooding problems affecting communities.
According to the President, past flood control plans and designs no longer seem sufficient to manage floodwater effectively, and the government needs to develop new strategies.
“I explained especially to the local government of Gov. Nina (Rebecca Ynares) here and the other members of those who are in the meeting about what our strategies can be in terms of making sure that the water does not come into the low-lying areas anymore, by building the impounding projects upstream,” the President told reporters.
During the situation briefing, President Marcos also suggested the construction of weirs to control the flow of floodwaters and mitigate its devastating effects on low-lying communities.
Rizal’s Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported at least 12 deaths, three missing persons, and five injuries due to flooding and landslides caused by Tropical Storm Enteng, exacerbated by the prevailing southwest monsoon.
An estimated 5,668 individuals, or approximately 1,670 families, are currently sheltering in 49 evacuation centers in the province, according to local authorities. PND
