Private partnership aims to transform Cebu into sustainable tourism hub

Updated: Jul 6

Aboitiz InfraCapital GMCAC (AGMCAC) and the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) joined hands to connect and synergize with different tourism industry leaders for sustainable tourism management. The collaboration was cemented at the Cebu Tourism Forum on Wednesday at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2.

The Cebu Tourism Forum featured the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) sector and discussed current patterns, trends, and preferences in the MICE industry, effective communications to support tourism and new opportunities to explore in different niches.

"We want to revolutionize tourism to meet future demands and support the country's tourism goals laid out by DOT Tourism Secretary Cristina Frasco. Through engagement and collaboration with key leaders in the MICE sector, we will be able to address gaps in the industry and set global standards for delivering effective MICE events that would further enhance the country's tourism landscape," said CCCI president Jay Yuvallos.

As a key player influencing the MICE sector, AGMCAC focuses on passenger connectivity through smart travel facilitation, such as the implementation of efficient airport transfer systems and the development of tourism infrastructures.

"We have several projects in the pipeline, such as the recently launched Cebu Connect, an airport transfer hub designed to cut layover time for domestic and international flights to and from Cebu. This project also enables airlines to develop more routes because of the shortened connecting time allowed by Cebu Connect," said chief executive officer of AGMCAC, Athanasios Titonis."

"Apart from this, we are getting insights directly from our customers who are end-users of the airport's facilities to enrich passenger experience," Titonis added.

Future infrastructure projects at the airport include the Airport Village and the Terminal 2 car park, both intended to support the growth of tourism in Cebu. These developments aim to enhance the overall passenger experience at MCIA significantly.

The Cebu Tourism Forum collaborates with travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, resorts, creative and entertainment niches, airlines, and MICE venues to innovate and expand Cebu's reach in boosting tourism efforts globally.
