Over 800 Cebu local officials nominate Garcia

Over 800 local officials on Monday nominated incumbent Governor Gwendolyn Garcia as 1 Cebu Party gubernatorial candidate for the 2025 midterm elections.

The party held the convention two days after the Sept. 28 deadline for the period provided by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to hold political conventions of parties to select or nominate candidates, considering that the last day fell on a Saturday.

Argao Mayor Allan Sesaldo nominated Garcia which was seconded by Liloan Mayor Aljew Frasco.

Pinamungajan Mayor Glenn Baricuatro closed the nomination that sealed the fate of the incumbent Cebu governor as the lone nominee to get the endorsement of over 800 local officials who attended the convention at the SkyHall in SM Seaside in this capital city.

“It's an honor to nominate Gov. Gwen as 1 Cebu’s official candidate for governor,” Sesaldo said on the sidelines of the event.

The provincial party’s move was in anticipation of the Oct. 1 to 8 filing of certificates of candidacy, nomination, and acceptance of nomination.

Comelec chair George Erwin Garcia said during the National Information Summit 2025 organized by the Presidential Communications Office that COCs will be made public through the election body’s official website two weeks after the filing to give the voters an opportunity to know their candidates.

Candidates’ statements of contributions and expenditures will also be posted, the election chief added.

Meanwhile, the provincial party of the Cebu governor signed a cooperation agreement with Kugi Uswag Sugbo (KUSUG) Party president of Acting Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin N. Garcia; Alayon-Nacionalista (NP) Party, represented by its president, Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas; and KAABAG Party represented by its president, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan in front of all the ranking officials of the 1-Cebu who attended the convention.
