Improved connectivity and reduced transportation costs are just some of the many benefits locals and tourists in Camiguin are now experiencing from the road construction and upgrading projects completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in six (6) barangays across the island province in Northern Mindanao.
In her report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH Region 10 Director Llilibeth N. Aparecio said that the projects, with a combined length of 2.02 kilometers, were carried out to ensure safer and more convenient travel, which eventually translates to an increase in socio-economic activities and employment opportunities within the province.
“Sturdy, all-weather roads are essential for building healthy and thriving communities as they provide access to basic necessities like healthcare, education, and other social services,” added Director Aparecio.
The DPWH Camiguin District Engineering Offices facilitated the concreting of five (5) farm-to-market roads (FMR), including the 387-lineal meter road from Sitio Damilag to Sitio Tampunay, Barangay Bacnit, in the municipality of Sagay, with the provision of grouted riprap and a drainage canal.
A new 258-meter road was also constructed in Barangay Santo Niño and a 642-meter FMR in Barangay Panghiawan in Catarman town; a 333-meter FMR in Barangay Manuyog, municipality of Sagay; and a 400.5-meter road connecting Barangays Agoho and Bug-ong in Mambajao town.
Aside from linking rural areas to the city proper, the roads are aimed at boosting tourism and promoting organically-grown agricultural products in Camiguin, which is recognized as an island shaped by volcanic eruptions and home to the sweetest Lanzones in the Philippines.
With a total cost of ₱39.2 million, the road projects in Camiguin were implemented through funding from the 2023 and 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
