The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) completed the construction of a flood mitigation structure along Magat River in Barangay Turod, Reina Mercedes, Isabela, to address recurring flooding issues, particularly during the rainy season.
DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, citing a report from DPWH Region II Director Reynaldo C. Alconcel, said that the flood mitigation project, funded under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA) with a contract amount of P144.4 million, was initiated in response to the severe flooding in the area when Magat Dam opens its spillway gates.
The rapid rise in water levels during such events has historically led to widespread flooding, scouring of riverbanks, and destruction of nearby communities and agricultural land.
Spanning a total of 779.8 linear meters, the flood mitigation structure involves a concrete dike covering the first 441 meters, followed by a concrete revetment with a single berm for the remaining 338.8 meters.
In addition, hexapods have been installed for toe protection to further enhance the structure’s stability, safeguarding the riverbanks against erosion and potential collapse.
“By ensuring the stability of the riverbanks, we are not only preventing the loss of agricultural productivity but also reducing emergency response costs for the government,” said Secretary Bonoan.
With the new flood mitigation structure, agricultural productivity is expected to improve, as valuable farmland will now be protected from floodwaters and soil erosion.
The flood mitigation structure along the Magat River in Barangay Turod, Reina Mercedes, Isabela, was implemented by the DPWH Isabela 3rd District Engineering Office.
