NegOr's DTI-Bagwis awardees prioritize consumer rights, welfare

Updated: Jul 19

DUMAGUETE CITY – Business establishments in Negros Oriental named this year’s Bagwis Award recipients pledged to continue prioritizing consumers’ rights and welfare.

The DTI-Negros Oriental awarded the Bagwis gold, silver, and bronze seals of excellence to 21 business establishments during a simple ceremony at a mall here on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Danford Sy, president of New Bian Yek Commercial, congratulated everyone and challenged them to continue providing excellent services to their customers while also abiding by the laws relative to trade and industry.

“I would like to thank DTI for encouraging all the local businesses to improve their services to their consumers,” Sy said. “Without a good consumer welfare program, they would not be coming to our stores.”

New Bian Yek Commercial, a dealer of construction materials, has been a consistent Bagwis awardee over the years and received a silver seal this year.

Meanwhile, Neil A. Albina, manager of Robinsons Supermarket - Calindagan, said the company endeavors to put up Consumer Welfare Desks at its different outlets while encouraging concessionaires and vendors to do the same.

“We are continuously abiding by all the government regulatory requirements and we ensure that all customers’ complaints are addressed so we can win them back,” he said.

Robinsons Supermarket - Calindagan was one of the six gold recipients of the 2023 Bagwis Awards, while five received the silver and 10 got the bronze seals.

The other gold awardees were Cang’s, Inc.; Fast Autoworld Phils. Corp.; Robinsons Handyman, Inc.; Ogassir Corp.; and Robinsons Supermarket Corp. - Perdices.

Krystle Jade Bato, DTI-Negros Oriental spokesperson, said the Bagwis program requires the recipients to live up to government standards and regulations within three years, otherwise, they lose the title.

"We recognize business establishments that are going the extra mile to protect their consumers to ensure that the marketplace is safe and secure," Bato said.

A Bagwis seal that is put up in a strategic location in the store informs consumers that it is a DTI-certified business establishment that has complied with regulatory standards, such as the price tag law and fair-trade laws, and is ISO 9001 compliant, among others.

"DTI is trying to ensure that this Bagwis brand will be known to everyone because this aims to give due recognition to establishments that uphold the rights of its consumers and practice responsible business where consumers get value for their money," she added. (PNA)
