Meralco secures 4.5MW de-loading capacity from ILP to augment supply

Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has secured up to 4.5 MW of de-loading capacity from Pioneer Float Glass Manufacturing, Inc. and Anglo Watsons Glass, Inc. for additional capacity under the government's Interruptible Load Program (ILP).

Following the power distributor's proactive calls for more ILP participants to help manage demand in the Luzon Grid, Pioneer Float Glass is set to sign an agreement for a two-megawatt (MW) de-loading capacity that will come from its manufacturing plant in Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City.

During the critical Red Alerts in April, when the grid's supply was insufficient, Pioneer Float Glass stepped up, voluntarily participating in the ILP without compensation. They de-loaded a total of 1.5 MW, playing a crucial role in averting rotational power interruptions.

As the leading float glass manufacturer in the Philippines, Pioneer Float Glass continues to lead by example, showcasing its capability to manage energy consumption. This collective effort, a true demonstration of 'Bayanihan ', is a testament to the power of community in times of need.

Also responding to the call for more ILP participants was Anglo Watsons, which has yet to finalize its enrollment but voluntarily de-loaded 1.3 MW during the Red Alert on May 28, 2024. Once fully enrolled, it will contribute 2.3 MW of de-loading capacity from its facility in Calamba, Laguna.

These ILP commitments resulted from Meralco's proactive engagement with key industries, including the Glass Manufacturers Association of the Philippines Inc. (GMAPI), of which Anglo Watsons is a member.

"These commitments reflect our shared dedication to alleviating strain on the power grid, ultimately benefiting thousands of small businesses and households by minimizing rotational power interruptions," Meralco Vice President and Head of Enterprise and National Government Ma. Cecilia M. Domingo said.

The ILP is an energy demand-side management program through which large-load customers are asked to use their generator sets or reduce their operations instead of drawing power from the grid to spare households from power interruptions during instances of Red Alert.

Following the Department of Energy's directive to enroll more participants under the ILP, Meralco intensified its campaign to boost available capacity. Over 100 companies with over 500 MW de-loading capacity across the Meralco franchise area are enrolled in the ILP.
