Meat processing plant opts for solar power from Meralco

Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company's (Meralco) solar company has teamed up with poultry meat processor May Harvest Corporation on a solar energy project that will support the latter's commitment to sustainable and responsible business operations.

MSpectrum Inc. will install a 1.3-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar generating system in May Harvest's tolling processing plant and another 45-kilowatt peak (kWp) solar facility in its head office in Sta. Maria, Bulacan. Once operational, the two solar projects will generate approximately 1,711,060.00 kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually.

"The cumulative 1.345-MWp solar installation will provide May Harvest with over P12 million in energy savings per annum and around 1,200 tonnes of carbon footprint reduction per year—this is equivalent to planting 56,000 mature trees or reducing vehicle travel emissions by almost 5,000,000 km," MSpectrum president and CEO Ma. Cecilia M. Domingo said.

For his part, May Harvest Chairman Efren M. Martinez said, "Apart from providing protection, we can now use our roof for solar panels. We are delighted we have solar power to operate our facility sustainably and reduce our carbon footprint."

Backed by Meralco's energy expertise and proven safety track record, MSpectrum offers tailor-fit solutions for industrial, commercial, and residential customers through an in-depth understanding of energy consumption behaviors and strategic partnerships with world-class technology partners.

The collaboration with MSpectrum builds on the long-standing partnership between May Harvest and Meralco.

"Gone are the days when a customer's engagement with Meralco starts and ends when we power up the business. As an end-to-end energy solutions partner, One Meralco goes beyond just delivering stable and reliable power," Meralco's first vice president and head of customer retail services, Charina P. Padua, said.

May Harvest previously heeded Meralco's call to participate in the government's Interruptible Load Program (ILP).

"We would also like to express gratitude to May Harvest for voluntarily de-loading to help manage demand in the Luzon Grid and prevent rotational power interruptions during times of low supply," Padua said.

Meralco and its subsidiaries provide end-to-end energy solutions that support local industries, which are crucial to achieving sustainable growth and food security in the country.
