The tension in the West Philippine Sea is progressing in an alarming rate. I really think diplomatic negotiations must be put forward, or prioritize diplomatic negotiations with neighboring countries, particularly China, to resolve territorial disputes in a peaceful and mutually beneficial manner.
We should strengthen international partnerships and work closely with allies and partners in the region, such as the United States and other Southeast Asian countries, to build a united front in promoting peace and stability in the region.
Transparency and accountability in government actions and decisions related to the West Philippine Sea are of primal importance to build trust among the Filipino people and the international community.
Emphases on the importance of upholding international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in resolving disputes and ensuring freedom of navigation in the region and not disregard it as a mere piece of paper are needed. Engaging in multilateral forums, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the East Asia Summit, to promote dialogue and cooperation on maritime security issues in the region are the best channels or avenues the Philippines can initiate or dive into.
Of course, while working for peace, we have to strengthen the country's defense capabilities and maritime security infrastructure in the West Philippine Sea to deter any potential threats and ensure the protection of Filipino interests in the region. Meanwhile, we have to further explore opportunities for economic cooperation and joint development projects with neighboring countries in the West Philippine Sea, which can help foster mutual trust and promote peaceful relations.
Public diplomacy is also of critical significance to raise awareness among the Filipino people about the importance of maintaining peace in the West Philippine Sea and garner public support for government actions in the region. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology in the implementation of a comprehensive monitoring and tracking system that will closely monitor activities in the West Philippine Sea, including illegal fishing, environmental degradation, and potential security threats are vital in maintaining peace and guarding our sovereignty.
As a PR man myself, I suggest the government develop a robust crisis management plan in case of any escalation of tensions or incidents in the West Philippine Sea, and coordinate closely with relevant government and international agencies and partners to address any challenges that may arise. Our leaders should adopt and implement these additional strategies to further enhance efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the West Philippine Sea and safeguard the country's interests in the region.
