In ongoing efforts to enforce road safety and crack down on unregistered or "colorum" vehicles, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has reported apprehending over 6,000 units nationwide in the first half of June.
Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, head of the LTO, said on Friday 6,064 motor vehicles were apprehended nationwide in the first 15 days of June 24 in the continuing aggressive implementation of the agency’s “No Registration, No Travel” policy.
Mendoza underscored the importance of vehicle registration not just as a governmental obligation but also for the safety of vehicle owners and their families.
"Renewing your vehicle's registration ensures its roadworthiness, which is crucial for your safety and that of your loved ones," Mendoza said.
Out of the total vehicles apprehended, which included 5,127 motorcycles and various four-wheeled vehicles, 5,470 received violation tickets while 981 were impounded. The crackdown also targeted unauthorized public utility vehicles, resulting in the apprehension of 34 passenger jeepneys and seven buses.
Mendoza stressed the significant penalties and impoundment consequences for non-compliance, underscoring the potential risks of accidents associated with operating unregistered vehicles.
"The penalty is steep, and impoundment is enforced. But more importantly, neglecting registration can lead to accidents," Mendoza warned.
The LTO chief said the agency continues to uphold strict enforcement measures and urges vehicle owners to promptly comply with registration requirements to avoid legal repercussions.
