LTFRB begins crackdown unconsolidated PUVs

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced on Wednesday that starting today, May 16, it will begin apprehending jeepney drivers who have failed to consolidate their public utility vehicles (PUVs) into cooperatives.

In a TV interview, LTFRB Chairman Teofilo Guadiz III stated that PUV operators who did not apply to consolidate their operations as part of the PUV Modernization Program (PUVMP) by the April 30, 2024, deadline would now be considered illegal. Their unconsolidated jeepneys would be classified as “colorum.”

“Starting tomorrow, we can flag down and apprehend drivers who did not consolidate, as the grace period we provided for them to stop operating has ended,” Guadiz said.

According to LTFRB, PUV consolidation is the first phase of the PUVMP and would be followed by fleet management as the second phase.

In January, Marcos extended the consolidation deadline for PUVs after clamors from unconsolidated PUV operators.

The three-month extension was aimed at granting an opportunity to those who expressed the intention to consolidate but did not meet the previous deadline.
