BAGUIO CITY – Landslides and soil erosions were reported in Pinsao Pilot, Aurora Hill, Bakakeng Central, among others, here due to continuous rains brought about by Typhoon Carina.
“The disaster operations center will continue to be in watch for incidents as incessant rains brought by Typhoon Carina continue to pound the city,” the Baguio City Public Information Office said in a Facebook post past 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Mayor Benjamin Magalong urged residents to remain alert and report to authorities any incidents that may endanger their lives.
“Monitor the weather condition and look at your surroundings for possible threats of flooding or landslides. Report any incident to the direct emergency hotlines,” he said.
Magalong said emergency response teams have been activated and placed on alert, with the city’s Disaster Operations centralized at the Baguio Smart City Command Center where all first responder units have been consolidated for faster response time.
Aileen Refuerzo, city chief information officer, said the 911 emergency number can be contacted for any form of emergencies or through the Baguio in my Pocket (BIMP) phone application.
Mobile phone users simply need to dial “911” with calls from Smart and PLDT users directly received and acted on by 911 Baguio, while calls from Globe users will be directed to 911 in the National Capital Region (NCR) and then transmitted to the 911 Baguio.
Baguio started experiencing intermittent heavy rainfall since Monday afternoon.
This prompted the city government to suspend classes in all levels for both public and private schools as well as work in all city government offices on Tuesday, except those rendering services necessary during typhoon season.
Suspension of work in the private sector were left to the discretion of their officials.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), in a 5 p.m. bulletin on Tuesday, maintains heavy rainfall outlook as Carina moves northward estimated until Wednesday afternoon.
“On the track forecast, Carina will remain far from the Philippine landmass. It is also forecast to make landfall over the northern portion of Taiwan between tomorrow evening and Thursday (25 July) morning, then exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility hours later,” it added.
Road situations
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced the closure of Kennon Road due to a rock slide at Camp 6, Tuba, Benguet.
“Kennon Road is not passable until further notice,” the DPWH said in a post on its official social media page.
Motorists have been advised to use Marcos Highway, Baguio-Bauang Road or the Nangalisan road in traveling to and from Baguio City.
The DPWH-Cordillera also reported that as of 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Baguio-Bauang Road and the Nagalisan Road are one way passable due to a fallen tree in Yagyagan, Sablan, Benguet and rock fall. (PNA)
