Imee pushes NHA charter renewal

Senator Imee R. Marcos formally sponsors and urges the passing of the Charter Renewal of the National Housing Authority (NHA) or Senate Bill No. 2818 “An Act Strengthening National Housing Authority by Extending its Corporate Term and Rationalizing its Powers, Repealing for this Purpose Presidential Decree No. 757, series of 1975,” showcasing the importance of the agency as the main production arm of socialized housing in the country, playing a major role in providing affordable and decent housing for Filipino families.

“This proposed measure, Senate Bill No. 2818, seeks to strengthen the NHA by first increasing the capitalization from P5 billion to P10 billion, in addition to extending its corporate term for another 50 years,” Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Urban Planning, Housing and Resettlement, Sen. Marcos explained.

“The bill also seeks to expand the powers and functions of the Authority to cover housing operations and even support services,” the Senator added.

Sen. Marcos sought the support of her colleagues from the Senate saying, “Sana ay manahan sa ating mga puso ang mensaheng ito at nawa’y sang-ayunan ng aking mga mahal na kasamahan sa Senado ang Senate Bill 2818 sa lalong madaling panahon.”

As co-sponsor of the NHA bill, Sen. JV Ejercito, in delivering his sponsorship speech, reiterated the importance of NHA’s extension in the continuation of its mandate to provide quality and livable shelters. “Para po sa mga halos wala, nakapagbibigay po ng pag-asa ang NHA sa pamamagitan ng mga programang pabahay na makatuwiran at makatao, nakabatay sa kakayahan at katayuan sa buhay,” Sen. Ejercito shared.

“Mr. President, dear colleagues, I appeal for the immediate passage of the proposed measure seeking to renew the corporate life of the National Housing Authority,” the senator added.

On the other hand, Senate Majority Leader Francis N. Tolentino signified to co-sponsor the same bill, supporting the same cause for the housing agency.

Established in 1975 as a government-owned and controlled corporation, then President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed PD 757, creating the NHA as the government’s arm in housing the Filipino people.

To date, the NHA implements various housing programs for the informal settler families in danger areas, government employees, former rebels, indigenous peoples and families affected by calamities and government infrastructure projects. It is under the administrative supervision of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.

On July 31, 2025, the NHA will reach its 50th Charter Anniversary, ending its corporate life as indicated in its mandate.
