Iloilo provides P9.1M in dengue response initiative

ILOILO CITY – The provincial government will provide PHP9.1 million in financial assistance to 43 local government units for their dengue response activities as cases in Iloilo continue to rise.

Data furnished by the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) on Thursday showed the provision of assistance, chargeable against the provincial disaster risk reduction and management fund, was contained in Executive Order number 184, signed by Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. on Aug. 21.

Governor Defensor signed a memorandum of agreement with the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Iloilo during their emergency meeting on Wednesday as one of the requirements for the release of the dengue aid.

“The amounts would vary by the category of the municipality; PHP300,000 for big municipalities, PHP200,000 for the middle-class municipalities, and PHP100,000 for small towns,” Badiangan Mayor and LMP Iloilo Executive Vice President for Internal Affairs Suzette Mamon, said in a statement.

Thirteen LGUs will receive PHP300,000 each, 22 at PHP200,000 each, and eight will have a dengue aid of PHP100,000 each.

The funds will be primarily used for awareness campaigns and procurement of medicines and medical and laboratory supplies.

“The amount will be processed and will be released directly to the LGUs so that they can readily disburse the same to have an immediate intervention for the dengue cases in their respective municipalities,” Mamon added.

The province recorded 7,814 cases, including 20 deaths from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31.

This is 561.1 percent higher than the 1,182 cases, including two deaths, posted during the same period in 2023.

Further, 419 barangays have a clustering of cases and nine hotspot villages.

There is a clustering of cases when three or more cases are recorded within four consecutive weeks. A barangay is considered a hotspot when there is a clustering of cases with an increasing trend or with a dengue death. (PNA)
