Ilocos Norte residents evacuate due to flood




LAOAG CITY – Some 11 families living in the low-lying areas of Banna, Burgos, and Laoag in Ilocos Norte remain in evacuation centers on Wednesday due to bad weather.


Rochelle Gajes, provincial social welfare and development officer, said food packs were given to the evacuees.


In Pagudpud town, the local government has advised motorists to drive with caution along the Pancian road, which remains passable to all types of vehicles as of Wednesday morning. A 15-minute interval for passing vehicles are, however, in place due to road clearing.

 

Maintenance crew of the Department of Public Works and Highways and personnel of the Philippine National Police have been deployed in the landslide-prone areas to conduct clearing operations, manage traffic flow, and assist motorists. 


Since Tuesday, some areas in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte provinces have been experiencing intermittent rains, rendering several roads not passable and some houses flooded. 


A landslide transpired between Maggon and Bessang Pass landmark in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur around 2:45 pm on Tuesday. 


Only one lane is passable as of Wednesday morning and clearing operations along the Tagudin-Cervantes road in Barangay Malaya, Ilocos Sur continue, according to the DPWH.


Suspension of work, classes


Classes and work in government offices and public and private schools in parts of Ilocos Sur were suspended on Wednesday due to Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon. The local governments of Bantay, Magsingal, and Santa Cruz announced the suspension of work and classes as early as Tuesday night. 


The local government unit of Quirino in Ilocos Sur followed with the announcement posted through its official Facebook page on Wednesday morning.
