Heightened vigilance vs. armed groups ahead of COC filing deadline

As the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) enters the final two days, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil ordered police units nationwide to intensify security operations, especially in areas historically prone to election-related violence.

Marbil directed increased police visibility, establishment of strategic checkpoints and enhanced intelligence monitoring.

“We are putting extra attention on regions that have seen heightened activity from armed groups and criminal elements. We will not allow any threats to undermine the democratic process. Our primary objective is to prevent any form of violence or intimidation,” he said in a statement Sunday.

Marbil assured that all necessary precautions are in place, with police units nationwide on high alert and prepared to respond swiftly.

He encouraged the public to promptly report suspicious activities to authorities.

“Let us all work together to ensure a peaceful and orderly election process. The success of these elections depends not just on the police but on the cooperation of every Filipino citizen,” he added.

The filing of COC and certificate of nomination – certificate of acceptance of nomination will be until Oct. 8.

Marbil warned that severe sanctions will be imposed on police officers found engaging in political activities.

“The PNP remains a nonpartisan institution,” he said. “Our integrity is non-negotiable, and we must uphold the rule of law at all times.” (PNA)
