Gadon refutes VP Healthcare has improved under PBBM admin

MANILA – The Marcos administration has made significant strides in improving the country’s healthcare system, Presidential Adviser for Poverty Alleviation Secretary Larry Gadon said Wednesday.

Gadon issued the statement after Vice President Sara Duterte hit the government for its supposed failure to help Filipinos in addressing their needs when it comes to taking care of their health.

He responded to Duterte’s claim that the funds allotted for the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) are being diverted into matters that have nothing to do with public health.

“Vice President Sara Duterte's recent statement criticizing PhilHealth and the Philippine healthcare system has sparked debate, suggesting that funds are being diverted away from healthcare. However, this assertion overlooks significant improvements and reforms,” Gadon said.

“PhilHealth has expanded coverage to 100 percent of Filipinos under President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos, ensuring comprehensive health insurance for all, including non-paying members,” he said.

He said hospital bill subsidies from PhilHealth have increased from 20 percent to 30 percent, while subsidies for breast cancer treatment and dialysis have been significantly enhanced, reducing financial burdens on patients.

He said the Marcos administration has introduced several reforms to address challenges within PhilHealth, including initiatives to strengthen anti-fraud measures and enhance digitalization for greater efficiency.

“These efforts have saved an estimated PHP2 billion by detecting and prosecuting fraudulent claims,” Gadon said.

He said the current administration has also increased the funding for healthcare, infrastructure development, and public-private partnerships to improve healthcare delivery and accessibility.

He said Duterte should focus more on “accurate information and acknowledging ongoing reforms,” cautioning that misleading statements would only undermine public trust and hinder collective efforts to improve healthcare in the country.

“In conclusion, while there are valid concerns about the healthcare system, it is crucial to recognize the substantial progress made under the Marcos administration,” Gadon said. “By focusing on this, Filipinos can work together to build a more robust and responsive healthcare system that serves the needs of every citizen.” (PNA)
