Flu-like illness declines by 18% in first 8 months

MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday reported an 18 percent decline in influenza-like illnesses (ILI) from Jan. 1 to Aug. 24, or about 102,216 cases, compared to the same period last year.

There were a total of 125,153 ILI cases logged during the same period last year.

“However, there has been an increase in cases over the last three to four weeks, consistent with the ongoing rainy season,” the DOH said in a statement.

“All regions except the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have shown an increase in cases in the recent four weeks.”

From July 28 to Aug. 10, the region logged 9,491 cases or 55 percent higher compared to the 6,124 cases reported from July 1 to 27.

Common symptoms of ILIs include fever, cough, sore throat, colds, body aches, and headaches.

The top three causes for this period are Influenza A with 777 cases (28.5 percent); Rhinovirus with 770 cases (28.2 percent); and Enterovirus with 675 cases (24.7 percent).

The DOH is in the process of procuring influenza vaccines with the bidding process ongoing. Submission and opening of bids start on Sept. 6.

The public is advised to take proactive steps against ILIs and other diseases common during the rainy season.

The DOH said eating well, staying active, getting vaccinated, hand washing and wearing face masks could prevent the spread of ILIs. (PNA)
