Cebu City hog raisersget chicks as alternative

CEBU CITY – This city’s Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) on Thursday cited a private firm for providing hog farmers in African swine fever (ASF)-hit villages here with chicks.

Dr. Alice Utlang, DVMF head, said the Universal Feed Mill Corp. donated 4,171 heads of White Leghorn chicks to 83 farmers in Barangays Bonbon and Pulangbato.

“Each of the 83 hog farmers got 50 chicks. Those hog farmers whose swine died but did not undergo tests got 30 heads each,” she said.

Utlang thanked Dr. Abel De Manuel, the company’s chief executive officer, for helping the hog farmers, saying the chicks could help cushion the impact of ASF on the livelihood of these farmers.

The company also sent veterinarians and animal technicians to train the hog farmers in their new livelihood.

Meanwhile, Utlang said three upland villages remained ASF-affected.

“Two villages tested no more positive for the highly contagious swine disease,” Utlang told the Philippine News Agency.

She also thanked the Department of Agriculture for providing the city with 150 personal protective equipment and 2,000 facemasks to be used by her office’s ASF Prevention and Control Team in their surveillance and testing. (PNA)
