The iPhone 16 was officially launched at midnight on October 18, with hundreds of people lining up as early as four hours before the doors opened at the Globe Iconic Store in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) to be among the first to get their hands on the latest smartphone.
But beyond the excitement for the newest gadget, iPhone fans are also making a difference for the environment through Globe's Trade-in program with partner CompAsia. This initiative is part of Globe's advocacy for device circularity, which aims to minimize e-waste and aligns with its Net Zero commitments.
"Trade-ins give new life to old phones that would otherwise be shelved or discarded, and using refurbished phones has an 87% lower climate impact than new devices," Globe said, citing data from the GSMA.
Device circularity is especially important in the Philippines, which is the third-largest source of e-waste in Southeast Asia, following Indonesia and Thailand, according to the United Nations' Global e-Waste Monitor. In 2022, the Philippines contributed 540 million kilograms of e-waste to the global total.
Through the program, Globe Postpaid customers—both new and recontracting—can exchange their old iPhones, Samsung, or Huawei devices for cashback. Globe’s partnership with CompAsia allows customers to trade in iPhones (models 11 to 15) and receive up to P55,700 off the price of the iPhone 16, with the trade-in value credited to their postpaid bill in the next billing cycle.
