BI arrests Korean ‘gambling lord’

By Tony Chavez

Bureau of Immigration (BI) fugitive search unit (FSU) agents arrested a South Korean man wanted in his country for illegal gambling.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado shared the arrest of Choi Jonguk, 42, on October 12 in a popular entertainment area in Brgy. Tambo, Parañaque.

Choi has been on the BI’s wanted list since 2019, when he was charged with operating an illegal gambling website that catered to Korean customers who bet on the results of sports competitions.

He allegedly made money by selling sports betting tickets online, violating his country’s National Sports Promotion Act.

Meanwhile, the BI also reported the arrest of another South Korean national wanted by authorities in his country for illegal drug trading.

Viado identified the fugitive as Seo Jungchul, 37, who was arrested by the BI FSU on October 7 at the Clark Freeport Zone in Angeles City, Pampanga.

Seo is the subject of a deportation order issued in 2019 for being an undesirable alien.

He is the subject of an Interpol red notice and has been overstaying in the Philippines in an attempt to evade arrest and prosecution for his crimes in Korea.

A warrant for his arrest was reportedly issued by the Seoul Central District Court in 2017 after he was indicted for violating his country’s narcotics control act.

South Korean authorities alleged that Seo engaged in the purchase, consumption and trading of Philopon, a form of methamphetamine, which is a commonly abused drug substance in Korea.

Both Choi and Seo are considered undocumented aliens as their passports have already been revoked by their government.

They will be detained in the BI’s facility inside Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig, until their deportation.
