77 years of committed humanitarian service

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has just commemorated 77 years of transformative humanitarian service.

As the organization's 102 chapters nationwide reinforce their shared goals and dedication, the PRC continues to serve as a beacon of change, dignity, and progress in the face of various disasters impacting millions of Filipinos. Through enhancements in logistics, assets, and facilities, including a bolstered Operations Center, the PRC has solidified its ability to deliver life-saving assistance.

This transformative change was made more evident on the night of Saturday when PRC assisted in transferring patients from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) following a fire incident. Additionally, the PRC provided 16 heavy-duty fans to help alleviate discomfort caused by smoke exposure. Chairman & CEO Richard "Dick" Gordon, responding to a request for support from Director Gap Legaspi, ensured the delivery of fans to help clear heavy smoke, particularly in the Emergency Room (ER).

"Upon PGH's request for assistance with patients affected by last night's fire, we promptly dispatched industrial fans to mitigate the smoke's effects and provide relief to ER patients.  Kusang Loob!  Malasakit! Pakikikapwa Tao!  That is our brand,” Chairman Gordon stated.

The 16 heavy-duty fans were allocated as follows: one air cooler and one industrial fan were deployed to the temporary ER in the PGH Atrium to cool the area housing 30 patients; eight electric fans and one air cooler were placed in the OB Admitting Section, which accommodates 20 patients; and five industrial fans at the Main ER.

Chairman Gordon emphasized the critical need for trained first aiders in every household, school, and RC143 volunteers in every community. He stated, "Given the Philippines' susceptibility to diverse hazards, we cultivate self-reliance within communities through first aid training and the recruitment of RC143 volunteers."

Over the years, Chairman Gordon and PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang have emphasized the necessity of immediate collective action to tackle climate change, promote gender equality, meet the country's blood supply needs, and enhance grassroots healthcare provision.

These initiatives have significantly strengthened the organization's commitment to fostering peace, sustainable development, and humanitarian assistance. The legacy of Chairman Gordon and past PRC leaders will endure for years to come.

Upholding the Seven Fundamental Principles of the PRC (Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Unity, Independence, Voluntary Service, Universality), the organization continues to inspire hope and provide aid to Filipinos in need.

Recently, Manila experienced record-breaking heat index levels, with forecasts indicating that temperatures may continue to rise. Extreme heat poses significant health risks, including fatal ailments.

Secretary Ted Herbosa, leading the Department of Health, has undertaken a commendable effort in collaboration with organizations and local government units to prevent heat-related illnesses through information dissemination and vaccination campaigns.

Despite the challenges posed by our country's geography as an archipelago, Secretary Ted and his team are dedicated to enhancing our healthcare system. It is crucial for the Department of Health to embrace technological advancements and acquire necessary equipment to better serve the Filipino population.

Undoubtedly, Secretary Ted has a strategic roadmap in place to enhance our healthcare infrastructure and ensure the well-being of our fellow citizens.

Are our firefighters adequately equipped, trained, and physically fit for the demanding tasks they face daily? This raises a crucial question for the Bureau of Fire: is it time to review and enhance their capabilities in rescue and firefighting operations?

The recent passing of volunteer firefighter Chasper Kenneth A. Oliver during a fire incident in San Juan serves as a poignant reminder of the dedication and sacrifice shown by those who volunteer for such demanding tasks without pay.

In honor of heroes like him, it is essential that his selfless act is not overlooked. It is imperative that our Bureau of Fire revisits and reviews its training programs and protocols to ensure the safety and effectiveness of all firefighters.

To all firefighters and volunteers, your bravery and service make you heroes who deserve our utmost care and respect.
