Public warned vs. continued

degassing in Taal Volcano

The head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday advised the public to refrain from entering the Taal Volcano Island, a permanent danger zone, as the volcano continues to emit gases.

"Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is the gas that we can smell. There are other gases that are also dangerous that we might not be able to detect like carbon dioxide which in large quantities can displace air and asphyxiate," Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol told the Philippine News Agency.

On Saturday, Phivolcs reported that degassing activity was monitored at the main crater from 1:30 a.m. to 7:55 a.m. It generated thick plumes reaching 2,400 meters high.

Taal Volcano has been degassing significant volumes of gas since March 2021, the Phivolcs said.

Degassing occurs when volcanic materials come into contact with water, creating steam and volcanic gases.

"Rain in the Taal area last week increased steam emissions, as rainwater seeped into the volcanic system and quickly turned into steam," Bacolcol said.

He also noted that the steam contains SO2 which is acidic and could irritate the respiratory system.

Taal Volcano has been on Alert Level 1 since July 2022, which means there is an

Pilot-testing of Kadiwa app

in NCR before year end – DA

By Lyn Y. Tallio

In accordance with the administration’s thrust to make affordable agricultural products more accessible to consumers , the Department of Agriculture (DA) yesterday announced it is eyeing to pilot-test a Kadiwa store mobile application before year end.

" We are planning to launch a Kadiwa app where ordering and buying will be much easier for our Kadiwa buyers," DA Assistant Secretary for Consumer Affairs and Legislative Affairs Genevieve Velicaria Guevarra said during Radyo Pilipinas’ Usapang Agrikultura program on Monday.

“Hopefully by the end of the year, we will have a pilot project where we will test, perhaps, first in the NCR,” she said.

Guevarra said the DA was currently working with the private sector for the technicalities and initial launching of the said app, and its nationwide launching once successfully piloted.

According to the DA official, there are almost two million households regularly buying from 472 Kadiwa stores nationwide.

These include 266 regular Kadiwa stores, 119 regular Kadiwa pop-up stores, 52 regular Kadiwa ng Pangulo (KNP) sites, 32 Kadiwa-on-wheels, and three Kadiwa centers.

There are also more than 1,400 farmer cooperatives and organizations currently linked to the Kadiwa stores.

Guevarra said the DA plans to establish at least one Kadiwa Center per province in partnership with the local government units and agencies.

“Our goal is to have a Kadiwa Center in each province, and in all of the major cities,” she said.

The PRA is mandated to process applications for SRRV, a special non-immigrant visa that permits multiple entry, provides other benefits and is issued to qualified foreign national retirees.

Tansingco said the BI would assist the PRA in vetting foreign nationals applying for retiree visas in the country.

“This electronic data exchange system would allow for better monitoring, assisting the PRA in the implementation of their mandate, as well as allowing the BI to intercept foreign nationals with derogatory records attempting to reside in the country,” the BI chief said.

The initiative aims to expedite data exchange, facilitating smoother procedures for holders of the SRRV and enabling a more efficient monitoring system for immigration officers.

The agreement also introduces an advanced online/electronic system designed to facilitate the seamless exchange of information between the BI and PRA.

This allows the PRA to access travel histories and facilitate the verification of any derogatory records.

Likewise, the system seeks to bolster the implementation of Republic Act 11032, also known as the Ease of Doing Business and Efficient Government Service Delivery Act of 2018.

The agreement shall be valid and effective for a period of five years, and subject to renewal every two years.                FROM PAGE 1
